About Me
I am a first grade teacher at Downtown Elementary School in Memphis, TN. This is my eleventh year of teaching, and all eleven years have been in first grade! I love teaching first grade because I believe it is such an important year for children. I am a Reading/Language Arts teacher, and teaching children to read is my passion. Downtown Elementary is a wonderful place to work. This blog is for the students, parents, and friends of my classroom. I want it to be a place where people can read and ask questions about what is going on at school.
I was born and raised in Atlanta, GA, but I have lived in Memphis since I graduated from Rhodes College in 1993. I received a B.A in Psychology, and then went on to get my Masters of Arts in Teaching from the University of Memphis. I live in Midtown and enjoy cooking, reading, ”porch gardening”, traveling, and hanging out with family, friends, and my dog, Gracie. She is a highly intelligent yellow lab mix that likes to bark a lot. First graders are my favorite because they make me smile everyday.

Thanks so much for providing this recap and view into our children’s first day of class! This blog is a wonderful resource for parents.
Hi Ms. Garverick,
I hope you read this in time and I hope you are still in need of a chaperone for the trip tomorrow. I can’t remember if I signed up already just like I couldn’t remember if I had paid or not. Jordan is a bit under the weather so I’d like to stay close to him especially since this is an out doors trip. I am still looking for his homework folder. Let me know if it pops up there.
Thanks,
Sherry
